water

a poem for Pam Garrett by Matthew P. Anstey

you know me by many names

but this day just call me water

i’m river, flirting with shifting shores

chaperone of life and limb

i’m storm, an artist flinging rain paint

whisking whitetops and whirling waves

i’m ocean, framing earth anew

memory-keeper of the deep

i’m baptism, companion of the poor

unhindered gift for those twice-born

i’m life, from pierced side flowing

absolver of dark’s darkness

I’m waiting, but come to my side unhurried

i’m three-in-one, vast guardian of all
